An Open Mobile Internet revolution is necessary to boost mobile data use (.doc)
Author: Chris Bannink, LogicaCMG, June 2007
Abstract: Mobile Internet has not yet fulfilled the high expectations most players in the mobile value chain had at the beginning of this millennium. The reasons why are various. Difficult technical issues on handsets, operator specific programming languages and business rules, pricing issues and a big blur of non uniform, often inferior user experiences are giving the consumers cold feet. Content providers and mobile network operators (MNO’s) are wondering why their investments in mobile internet turn out to be money pits.
The Dutch Open Mobile Internet initiative (OMI) has not only analysed all these issues, but -in unique combined effort with consumers, content providers and all (!) Dutch MNO’s- are now willing to boost mobile internet, by making it open like the internet on a PC. Perhaps more European countries can learn how every party in the value chain of Mobile Internet can benefit from this new approach.

Open Mobiel Internet Initiatief Position Paper (.doc)

Twenty companies, listed in the annex, consider this alarming and in this document wish to address the issues that in their opinion underlie the current lack of success of the mobile internet.
